Series: Book 1: Supernatural Prison
Characters: Jessa and the Compass Brothers
Setting: Stratford Connecticut
Mature Themes: None - YA safe
Recommendation: A great fantasy read, easy enough to read and enjoy but not leave you feeling bored. Fans of the Mercy Thompson series and small town dramas would find this a good read.
This is one amazing cast of characters. With one leading lady and four different races of men to write, the author was setting herself up for a tricky one. Thankfully, I was not disappointed. Jessa was written to be strong yet still had a heart and emotions to compliment her strength. Two of the brothers, Maxamillion and Braxon were written clearly and with individual personalities, sadly, the other two brothers were not so lucky. Victims of a large cast and Max and Braxon having a more prominent plot role, the other two brothers were described and then less defined as the book progressed. However, the book would have been worse off without them in it.
The town was lightly described and while the inhabitants were described very colorfully, I really was hoping for a deeper world building. The plot was great and I really enjoyed the overall story. Jessa was a wonderful main character and her relationship with the Compass boys is one to admire. As the story progressed I found myself trying to answer the plot points before the were revealed and was always pleasantly surprised. My one gripe was that the ending was very abrupt, it felt more like a chapter break than the end of an entire book.
